Towards Creating a Framework for a European Institute of Peace
2011 - 2012
In 2010, the Finnish and Swedish Foreign Ministers jointly launched an initiative to create a European Institute of Peace (EIP), an independent body focusing on conflict resolution and peace mediation worldwide. Acknowledging that traditional diplomacy efforts are not always enough to support peace processes in countries affected by war, the aim is to strengthen European expertise and capacity for peace mediation. MediatEUr supports this initiative through a project jointly funded by the Swedish and Finnish Foreign Ministries, with four objectives: (1) Identify how to mobilise and maximise capacities for peacemaking, and how to create a profile for international peace mediation for the EU; (2) Create building blocks for future EIP activities; (3) Facilitate debate and generate options for institutionalising this capacity to make it available to EU institutions and (4) Produce materials to contribute to the reflection process.
Creating Improved Capacities for International Peace Mediation
2011-2012
mediatEUr, in partnership with the Crisis Management Initiative, has received a grant from the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to support the advancement of international peace mediation globally. mediatEUr’s work on this project focusses on EU capacity building, as well as the thematic areas of peace and justice (the European Forum for Peace and Justice), power sharing and accountability in international peace mediation, elections mediation, and roster management.
Intensive Introductory Course ‘Peace Mediation in the EU Context’

mediatEUr, in partnership with Swisspeace and the Centre for Peace Mediation, delivered a 3-day specialisation course on peace mediation to European External Action Service (EEAS) officials and EU Member State representatives. The pilot course was organised by the EEAS in collaboration with the European Institute of Public Administration (EIPA).
