Laurie Nathan

Dr. and Extraordinary Professor Laurie Nathan is Director of the Centre for Mediation at Pretoria University and Visiting Professor at Cranfield University. Between 1992 and 2003 he headed the University of Cape Town Centre for Conflict Resolution. He served on the Cameron Commission of Inquiry into Arms Trade (1994-1997); was an advisor on security and defence to several cabinet ministers and parliamentary committees in Southern Africa (1994-2002); and served on the Ministerial Review Commission on Intelligence in South Africa (2006-2008).

He has been a member of the Advisory Committee of the Arms Division of Human Rights Watch, the Carter Center’s International Council for Conflict Resolution, the Expert Advisory Group of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Democratic Governance Practice Network, and the African Union’s mediation team for Darfur. Dr. Nathan is also member of the UN Mediation Roster, and has been involved in many projects to build the mediation expertise and capacity of the African Union, SADC, ECOWAS and IGAD.
