István Gyarmati

Ambassador Prof. Dr. István Gyarmati is the President of the International Centre for Democratic Transition. During his diplomatic career, Ambassador Gyarmati was member of the Hungarian delegation to the Mutually Balanced Force Reduction talks, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and the Conference for Security and Cooperation in Europe follow-up meeting, as well as Head of Delegation to the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe and Confidence- and Security-building Measures. Gyarmati conducted the Opens Skies negotiations, and served as Head of the Security Policy Department of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry.
In 1995, Gyarmati was the personal Representative of the CSCE/OSCE Chairman-in-Office in Georgia, Chechnya. He participated in the negotiations on CSBMs in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and served as Chairman of the OSCE. His other posts include Senior Council, Under-Secretary of Defense, Chairman of the Missile Technology Control Regime, Chief Adviser of the Foreign Minister on Security Policy and Chairman of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons; In 1999-2003, he was Senior Vice-President of the New York-based think tank, the EastWest Institute.
