Discussions on the European Institute of Peace should be 'as inclusive as possible' says MEP Franziska Brantner

19 January 2012

MEP Franziska Brantner today commended the upcoming Open Space event organised by mediatEUr on the creation of a European Institute of Peace:

"The discussions about the European Institute of Peace must not solely take place behind closed doors. The issue is far too important to leave it to government negotiators alone. That's why I think the Open Space is a great idea. It's an important opportunity for civil society representatives and conflict resolution experts to feed their ideas and expertise into the ongoing preparations for the European Institute of Peace.

This will make the EIP not only more legitimate, but also more effective. Making the process as inclusive as possible was also one of my key motivations when I proposed to the European Parliament and the EU Council the launch of a pilot project on the European Institute of Peace. The proposal was adopted last month and will make sure that the European Parliament remains involved in the preparation of the EIP, thereby increasing the process' transparency."

Ms Brantner was elected to the European Parliament in 2009. She is a member of the informal Advisory Council to mediatEUr's project 'Towards Creating a Framework for a European Institute of Peace', funded by the Finnish and Swedish Ministries of Foreign Affairs.
